Reduce Poverty by Giving People more Opportunities to Donate

Coffee isn't the only thing that people spend a lot of money on. If we compared how much we spend on things that would be luxuries in developing countries, we would be amazed at how much our dollar could buy in the developing country. Saving the life of a child through sponsorship with World Vision or Compassion only costs about $30 a month. The fact is that our dollar goes a lot further in developing countries when we compare it to the price of products in our country. Given that the number of people using the internet increases everyday and the number of online purchases also increase everyday. I propose the idea of retailers providing an option for people to donate a small percentage of their purchases towards a fund that benefits children living in poverty. So if you are about to check out of the online checkout, you can tick an option that says "Add 5% of the cost of my purchase to my bill and donate this amount towards eliminating poverty for children living in developing countries." For example, the money could go towards World Vision, which allows you to provide food, eduation and health to a child for $30 a month.

In our world of consumerism, this can be an opportunity to give just a fraction of what we spend on ourselves to someone on the other side of the world who really needs help in order to survive.

Raise Awareness for Environmental Refugees

Climate change is forecasted to have a huge impact on the next generation of people in the next few decades. Environmental refugees represent the very real impact which climate change is having on people around the world right now. Perhaps environmental NGOs and organizations fighting to save the environment should focus their awareness campaigns more on environmental refugees because they put a human face to the environmental problems happening in our world today. I propose working with environmental NGOs to create an awareness campaign which will appeal not only to those who care about the environment, but also to humanitarians because we can highlight the impact that climate change is having on people. By raising awareness on the very real impact that climate change has on people, and how inter-related it is to other problems due to environmental refugees, this can be the first step towards advocating for legislation which creates laws which recognize environmental refugees. Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth" video raised awareness on climate change drastically, and creating a campaign which focuses on environmental refugees can appeal not only to environmentalists, but also the wider population by highlighting climate change's impact on real people today.

Sustainability through Education

These children and adults in these Third World communities have dire needs for basic life essentials, such as food, clean water, protection from disease, and education in order to build a sustainable living environment. To develop a society that can survive on its own will need committed professionals in their respective fields, ie doctors, city planners, engineers, designers, economists, teachers etc.

My plan is to create post-secondary educational programs in our colleges and universities that concentrate on professional humanitarian volunteerism in their respective fields of studies (ie Teaching degree with Major in Third World education with work placement, or Medical doctor specializing in providing aid to Third-World people, Argriculturalist majoring in African farming)

Eventually each year, these programs would produce graduates who'd be trained and devoted to working third-world communities and conditions sticken by absolute poverty...they'd have jobs through a work-placement program through NGO's and possibly government organizations like the Canadian military. Each year, NGO's could form teams of graduates that would live in third-world communities and create a sustainable living environment.

This a still an idea in the development, but I would like to challenge you readers to make suggestions to bring this idea closer to a reality.

The $5 Food Challenge

The $5 Food Challenge aims to raise awareness on the prevalence of food insecurity in BC by replicating the lifestyle and diet of individuals from food insecure households. Participants will take on the challenge of spending only $5 a day on food for one week and will post daily blogs on inov8.ca to share their experiences.

Activities to be completed by project team:
- Print posters and put them up at SFU campuses - Contact the SFU Food banks who may be interested in spreading the word or participating - Circulate posters through SFU email lists - Create a facebook group to invite people to the inov8 project page

Activities to be completed by inov8 team:
- Create a page for participants to post their blogs (we could have a page with 7 links- 1 for each day- and each link goes to a page which looks like a facebook wall, where participants could write their experience for that day.)

I've decided to drop the donation portion of the project and instead focus on raising awareness of food insecurity, rather than raising money for food banks. The key to this project, I think, is to get many participants blogging and many people viewing the blogs, and to convey the idea that food insecurity is not something that only homeless people experience, but is actually prevalent in many households in the Lower Mainland. I am expecting at least 10 participants, and at least 20 hits on the project page a day (If each participant has at least one person looking at their blog).

SFU Food Bank's Annual Winter Food Drive!

The SFU Food Bank provides nourishing food to students and SFU community members in times of need, and connects them with appropriate resources.

From November 23rd – December 12th, the SFU Food Bank will be asking for your help during our annual Winter Food Drive. The bulk of donations for the Food Bank come from this initiative, and we are so grateful for all the support from the SFU Community.

In 2008, more than 50 departments participated in the Winter Food Drive. If you are interested in donating food this year, please complete our short WebSurvey before November 16th. You can access the WebSurvey at: http://websurvey.sfu.ca/survey/45500210

This year, we are asking you to make your own donation box out of recycled Xerox boxes. The Food Bank will send you promotion material on November 17th which you can print out and tape to your donation boxes.

Some of our most needed items are: cereal, canned meat and fish, beans, vegan and vegetarian soups, non-perishable soy and rice milk, pasta and pasta sauce, peanut butter, canned fruit or vegetables, and rice. In addition to non-perishable food items, we appreciate donations of sealed packages of diapers, shampoo, shaving cream, baby food, and other toiletries.

We encourage you to think creatively and encourage your fellow staff and faculty members to donate to your department’s box. Here are some ideas:

If you are having a holiday gathering or party, ask participants to bring a non-perishable food item.
Issue a friendly challenge to another department to see which group can bring in the most donations!

Other ways you can help:
Use the SFU Library’s “Food for Fines” Campagin (also running November 23rd to December 12th) to clear your fines and make a donation to those in need. Check for details on the library website next week.
Volunteer to help collect boxes and sort donations on December 15th and 16th. Please email foodbank@sfu.ca if you can help.

SFU raises $174,900 for United Way in 2009!

SFU's United Way Campaign has raised $174,000 to date from nearly 300 donors and special events. We sincerely appreciate the support of our SFU Community at a time when assistance is desperately needed in the Lower Mainland.

We're also pleased to announce our prize winners this year: Jenny Lum of MBB won the reserved parking space; Ingrid Woldenga won the one-night's stay, with breakfast, at the Delta Vancouver Suites; and Bruce Brandhorst won the $75 gift certificate for Horizon's Restaurant.

It is worth noting that the special events added nearly $20,000 to our grand total! Special thanks go out to:

The “Our Neighbourhood” community has been created to enable Bus774 students to connect with others in their neighbourhoods with whom they can discuss concerns that are close to their hearts (and homes), and find practical ways of addressing them.

To begin the process of discussing the issues in your neighbourhood, please first register and login so that you can post, comment, and vote. All members of your group need to get register. The registration form is HERE. (Please use screen names that will clearly identify you to your team mates).

Nominate one person from your group to start the discussion by posting an introductory paragraph (less than 250 words) about your neighbourhood. This person can start posting this paragraph HERE.

The discussion is continued by group members posting new comments; initially under the introductory paragraph, but then under other team members’ comments.

Mission Statement

Product Description: A free voicemail service for the homeless (or those unable to avoid voicemail). The service allows each user their own mail box and send the voicemail as an email attachment.

Benefit Proposition: Voicemail is an essential tool for many job seekers. For homeless who have no fixed address and no phone, hearing back about job opportunities is almost impossible.

Key Business Goals: This is not-for-profit product and exists to improve the quality of life of the disenfranchised within our community. We intend to do this by removing one of the barriers to the job market.

Primary Market: The homeless of the Southern Fraser Valley who are seeking a job or otherwise require voicemail.

Secondary Market: Those within the Southern Fraser Valley who are not homeless, but still unable to afford voicemail.

Assumptions & Constraints:

1. Community of organizations will see this as valuable and will support it.
2. Technical & Financial constraint: we cannot provide unlimited lines or mailboxes. We are limited to one phone line and approx 50 mail boxes unless we have outside funding.
3. Technical constraint: limited storage space so we will not be storing the voicemails, rather sending them directly to their email. As such the only way to check their voicemail is on an internet-connect computer with audio.

"Our action and our inaction can impact people we might never know and never meet every day of our lives all around the world," says Jacqueline Novogratz, Acumen Fund’s Founder and CEO, as she discovered first hand how very small our world is.

As a high school freshman, Jacqueline was prompted by the teasing of her classmates to donate her favorite blue sweater - decorated with zebras and a landscape of Mount Kilimanjaro - to Goodwill. 5,000 miles and 10 years later, after leaving a career on Wall Street, Jacqueline founded Duterimbere, a micro-finance institution that made small loans to women in Rwanda. One day, she noticed a very small boy wearing the beloved blue sweater - and on running up to him to check the back of the sweater, she found her name on the tag. The blue sweater serves as a metaphor of how interconnected we all are.

Since the launch of Acumen Fund in 2001, Jacqueline has worked to make philanthropy become more strategic. Through patient capital, which is understood as a debt or equity investment in an early-stage enterprise - Acumen Fund has extended the benefits of the global economy to the majority of the world’s population that lives on less than four dollars a day. The low-income consumers who most need access to healthcare, water, housing, alternative energy, or agricultural inputs are receiving these critical services.

Registration for Social Innovation Case Competition 2010, to be held at SFU Surrey on Saturday, March 27, is now open. Registration of your team will be open until March 10 and we don't expect the limited space to remain vacant for long. If you do not have a team but are still interested in competing, then please let us know by email. If an incomplete team has an available slot, then we can assign you that team.

In the coming weeks, training sessions will be provided to help teams understand what social innovation is, how to analyze a case and how to present the case. More information about the sessions will be sent through SAO E-mails.

SICC 2010 will be a 24-hour case.

In September 2009, Rick Mercer was here to launch the Spread the Net campaign and issued a challenge pitting West vs. East in the national student challenge. Funds raised provide insecticide-treated bed nets to children in Liberia or Rwanda. The top fundraising school in the West and in the East will each receive a personal visit from Mercer and be featured on his television show.

		After a quick makeover in the summer, it is now easier to connect to other SIX members, and keep up to date with what is going on in the SIX network through the website. There is still lots of work to be done to it to make connecting to others easier, so if you have any ideas of what you want form the SIX website, please let me know!
	SIX A stronger Community
		2009 has been really exciting for SIX – the community is growing and support from all sectors is increasing. Specifically, thanks to all of those of who contributed to the some of the 600 methods in the Social Innovators Almanac. Keep an eye on SIX for a publication date in the spring and the launch of socialinnovator.info
